Monday: Ten times the place to the right

Bennie the Bear is sorting smooth stones for the new trail wall.

He drops ten stones into a cloth bag and ties it shut.

"Ten bags go in one box," he says, stacking them carefully.

"And ten boxes fill one crate."

Ferris the Fox peeks into the crate with wide eyes.

"How many stones are in there?" he asks.

Bennie smiles and taps the crate. "Each step up holds ten times as many as the step before."

"Let us find out how big that gets."

Learn it: each place is worth ten times more

Ten ones make one ten. Ten tens make one hundred.

Ten hundreds make one thousand. Ten groups of one thousand make 10,000.

So each place is worth ten times the place to its right.

A place value chart showing 3,333

Every digit in 3,333 is a 3, but each 3 has a different value.

The 3 in the thousands place is worth 3,000.

The 3 next to it is worth 300. 3,000 is ten times 300.

Dividing shows the same idea: 3,000 ÷ 300 = 10.

Learn it: the value of a digit

A place value chart shows each digit in its place.

In 472,815, the 7 is in the ten thousands place.

So the 7 is worth 70,000.

10 × 300 = 3,000?
800 ÷ 80 = 100?
10 × 5,000 = 50,000?
The 4 in 40,000 is ten times the 4 in 4,000.?
WHY THIS EXERCISE800 ÷ 80 is 10, not 100.
Try it
Count 10 paper clips into a small pile.
Make 10 piles like that. That is 100 clips.
Imagine 10 groups of 100. How many clips would that be?
Draw a place value chart and write 3,333 in it.

Great thinking! Tomorrow we read and write big numbers.
