Wednesday: Compare fractions

Donnie and Bennie each have a pear of the same size.

Donnie cuts his pear into 3 equal slices.

Bennie cuts his pear into 8 equal slices.

"Would you rather have 1/3 of a pear or 1/8?" asks Donnie.

Bennie looks closely at the slices.

"More slices means each slice is smaller," says Bennie.

"So 1/3 is greater than 1/8."

Learn it: same numerator

Two strips the same length: 1/3 and 1/8 shaded

Both fractions have 1 part. The parts are different sizes.

Thirds are bigger than eighths. So 1/3 > 1/8.

With the same numerator, fewer parts in the whole means bigger parts.

Learn it: same denominator

Two strips the same length: 5/6 and 2/6 shaded

Both strips are cut into sixths, so the parts are the same size.

5 sixths is more than 2 sixths. So 5/6 > 2/6.

Compare only parts of the same size whole.
