Thursday: The two gardens

Chris the Coyote smooths the feather in his hat.

"Donnie and Lizzy each planted a garden of the same size," he says.

"Donnie planted carrots in 2/4 of his garden."

"Lizzy planted carrots in 4/8 of hers."

"They wondered who had planted more carrots."

"Then Donnie lay one garden plan on top of the other."

"The carrot parts matched exactly. Both had the same!"

Story: Same amount, different names

Two garden plans: 2/4 and 4/8 shaded, the same length

2/4 and 4/8 cover the same part of the same-size garden.

So 2/4 = 4/8. They are both equal to 1/2.

Fold one into 4 rows and one into 8 rows.
Color 2/4 of the first and 4/8 of the second.
Lay one on top of the other. Do they match?
Draw Donnie's and Lizzy's gardens. Shade the carrot parts.

A gentle story! Tomorrow Freddy hosts a fraction review game.
