Tuesday: How many groups?

Lucy has 20 sunflower seeds in her tiny green backpack.

"I want to give away little bags of 5 seeds," she says.

"But how many bags can I make?"

Bennie holds up an empty bag. "Let us fill one bag at a time."

"Put 5 seeds in a bag, then start the next bag."

"We keep going until all the seeds are used," says Lucy.

Learn it: make groups of the same size

Lucy has 20 seeds. She puts 5 seeds in each bag.

She fills 4 bags, with none left over.

Four equal groups with five dots in each group

We write 20 ÷ 5 = 4.

This time we knew how many go in each group.

The quotient, 4, tells how many groups.

Skip count by 5 to check: 5, 10, 15, 20. That is 4 fives.
