Wednesday: Jumps and lengths

Freddy the Frog wants to cross the meadow in big, even jumps.

"Each jump is 5 feet long," he says.

Chris and Bennie mark each landing spot with a stick.

"After 4 jumps, how far has Freddy gone?" asks Chris.

Bennie draws a number line in the dirt.

"Equal jumps are equal groups, too," he says.

Learn it: equal jumps on a number line

Each jump is 5 feet. Freddy makes 4 jumps.

Skip count by 5: 5, 10, 15, 20.

So 4 × 5 = 20. Freddy has gone 20 feet.

A number line from 0 to 40 by fives, with a dot at 20

Lengths can be equal groups too.

Three ribbons are each 8 inches long. End to end, they make 3 × 8 = 24 inches.
