Monday: Round to the nearest ten

Bennie the Bear sets a big basket of stones on a tree stump.

Riley the Raccoon peeks inside. "How many stones are in there?"

Bennie checks his notebook. "I counted 347 stones this morning."

"That is a lot to say," Riley laughs.

"Is it about 340 or about 350?"

"Let us find out together," says Bennie.

"We will round to the nearest ten on a number line."

Learn it: find the two tens

To round, first find the two tens a number sits between.

347 sits between 340 and 350.

Look at the ones digit. In 347, it is 7.

A number line from 340 to 350, with a dot at 347

On the number line, 347 is closer to 350.

So 347 rounds to 350.

The middle number, 345, is just as close to both tens.

We agree that a number in the middle rounds up.

So a ones digit of 5 or more rounds up. Less than 5 rounds down.
