Wednesday: Add and make a new ten

Rosie and Bennie gather pinecones under the tall trees.

Rosie finds 247 pinecones. Bennie finds 135.

"Seven ones and five ones make 12 ones," says Rosie.

"That is too many for the ones place!"

Bennie smiles. "Then we trade 10 ones for 1 new ten."

Learn it: regroup the ones

Base-ten blocks: 2 hundreds, 4 tens and 7 ones
Base-ten blocks: 1 hundreds, 3 tens and 5 ones

Ones: 7 plus 5 is 12 ones.

Trade 10 ones for 1 ten. Now there are 2 ones left.

Tens: 4 tens, 3 tens and the new ten make 8 tens.

Hundreds: 2 hundreds plus 1 hundred is 3 hundreds.

So 247 plus 135 is 382.

Base-ten blocks: 3 hundreds, 8 tens and 2 ones

Ten tens make 1 hundred too. We can trade those the same way.
