Tuesday: Subtract hundreds, tens and ones

Rosie has a bag of 375 flower seeds.

She plants 142 seeds by the pond.

"Hooray!" says Rosie. "How many seeds are left in my bag?"

Bennie sits down beside her.

"We can take away one place at a time," he says.

"Ones first, then tens, then hundreds."

Learn it: take away each place

Base-ten blocks: 3 hundreds, 7 tens and 5 ones

This is 375. We take away 142.

Ones: 5 take away 2 is 3 ones.

Tens: 7 tens take away 4 tens is 3 tens.

Hundreds: 3 hundreds take away 1 hundred is 2 hundreds.

So 375 take away 142 is 233.

Base-ten blocks: 2 hundreds, 3 tens and 3 ones

Check it! 233 plus 142 is 375. The numbers match.
