Tuesday: Make a new ten

Riley finds 38 shiny stones by the creek.

Bennie finds 25 more stones.

Riley adds the ones. "Eight and five make thirteen!"

He scratches his striped tail. "But I only have room for one digit."

Bennie smiles. "Ten ones can turn into one ten. Let me show you."

Learn it: ten ones make a new ten

Here are 38 and 25.

Base-ten blocks: 3 tens and 8 ones
Base-ten blocks: 2 tens and 5 ones

Add the ones: 8 + 5 = 13.

Thirteen ones is 1 ten and 3 ones.

Trade ten ones for one new ten.

Add the tens: 3 + 2 + 1 = 6 tens.

So 38 + 25 = 63.
