Monday: Compare the hundreds

Oliver the Owl pushes his glasses up his beak.

"Bennie, I have a puzzle for you," he says.

"One basket has 412 berries. Another has 297 berries."

"Which basket has more?"

Bennie the Bear looks at the numbers carefully.

"Let us start with the biggest place," he says.

Learn it: look at the hundreds first

Bennie shows each number with blocks.

412 has 4 hundreds.

Base-ten blocks: 4 hundreds, 1 tens and 2 ones

297 has only 2 hundreds.

Base-ten blocks: 2 hundreds, 9 tens and 7 ones

Four hundreds is more than two hundreds.

So 412 is greater than 297.

We do not even need to look at the tens!
