Bruce the Bobcat has a big challenge for Bennie the Bear.
"Can we count all the way to one thousand?" Bruce asks.
Bennie smiles and opens a box of blocks.
"Counting by ones takes a long time," he says.
"Let us count by hundreds instead. Watch the flats!"
A flat is a square of 100 small cubes.
Bennie lays down flats one at a time.
He counts: 100, 200, 300.
Three flats show 300.
Bennie keeps going: 400, 500, 600, 700, 800, 900.
One more hundred makes 1000. Ten hundreds make one thousand!
Bruce adds tens and ones next to the flats.
Count the flats first. Then count the rods and cubes.
Two hundreds, three tens and four ones make 234.
