Monday: Odd and even

Lucy the Ladybug waves from a big daisy.

"Hello, Bennie! I have seven spots on my back," she says.

Bennie the Bear looks closely and puts her spots in pairs.

"Three pairs, and one spot is left," he says.

"Then seven is an odd number," says Lucy happily.

Learn it: make pairs

Put things in pairs, two by two.

If every one has a partner, the number is even.

If one is left over, the number is odd.

Eight dots in pairs, with none left over

8 dots make 4 pairs with none left. So 8 is even.

seven dots in a row

7 dots make 3 pairs and one left over. So 7 is odd.
