Tuesday: Missing numbers in taking away

Riley has 8 berries in a basket.

Some roll away down the hill.

Now there are 5.

"How many rolled away?" asks Bennie.

Learn it: think of adding

Look at 8 - ? = 5.

Taking away and adding go together.

So think 5 + ? = 8.

Bennie counts on from 5, "6, 7, 8."

That is 3. So 8 - 3 = 5.
