Tuesday: The operating system

A neighbor brings in a laptop that will not open any app. The screen shows a spinning circle, and the fan hums. "The apps are all broken!" Rocket says.

Raven taps the table. "What do you notice? Every app is stuck at the same time. Is it the apps, or something under them?"

Nova glows softly. "Would you like a hint? One piece of software has to start before all the others."

The manager of the machine

The operating system is the first big piece of software a device loads. It is the manager.

It starts the device. It draws the screen. It listens to the keyboard, the mouse and the touchscreen.

Most of all, it shares the parts. Many apps want the processor, the memory and the screen at the same time.

The operating system gives each app a quick turn. It is so fast that everything seems to run at once.

  • Starts the device and loads the apps you tap.
  • Shares the processor, memory and screen between apps.
  • Keeps track of files and folders on storage.
  • Talks to the hardware, like the speaker and the camera.
  • Shows messages when something needs attention, like a low battery.

Phones, tablets, laptops and game machines all have an operating system. They have different names and looks, but they do the same jobs.

Think of a busy kitchen with one stove and five cooks. The head cook decides who uses the stove and for how long. The operating system is the head cook for the processor.

PUT THE STEPS OF OPENING AN APP IN ORDER, FROM THE MANAGER'S POINT OF VIEW.
  • ?The operating system finds the app on storage
  • ?The operating system loads the app into memory
  • ?The app appears on the screen
  • ?You tap the app picture
  • ?The operating system gives the app turns with the processor
WHY THIS EXERCISEEvery app opens through the operating system. It finds, loads and shares.
WHO DOES THAT JOB?
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
Which software gives each app a turn with the processor?
What loads first when a device starts?
An app wants to play a sound. Who passes the sound to the speaker?

Why every app froze at once

In the story, every app was stuck. That is a clue. If one app were broken, only that app would stop.

When everything stops, the manager itself is probably too busy. Maybe too many apps are open. Maybe an update is running.

The safe fix is simple: wait a minute, then restart with a grown-up nearby. A restart gives the operating system a fresh start.

What you seeLikely reasonSafe thing to try
One app is stuckThat app has a problemClose that app
Every app is stuckThe operating system is overloadedWait, then restart
The screen is darkNo power or asleepA grown-up checks the charger
The software that manages all the other software is the operating what?
One app is stuck and the others work. Should you close that app or restart everything?
Every app is stuck at once. Is the problem probably one app or the manager?
StatementTrue or false?
The operating system draws the screen for the apps.?
Each app talks to the speaker on its own.?
A phone has no operating system.?
The operating system gives apps turns with the processor.?
WHY THIS EXERCISEThe operating system sits between the apps and the hardware. Nothing gets to the hardware without it.
For a grown-up
Restarting is a safe fix for a child to suggest, with you nearby.
Show your child where the restart choice is on one device.
Explain that saving work first matters, because memory forgets when the power goes off.
Rocket sees a spinning circle on every app. What safe fix should the crew try after waiting?
WHY THIS EXERCISEA restart clears memory and lets the operating system load again from storage.

Well done! You know who runs the show inside a device. Tomorrow you will look at the apps that do the jobs you care about.
