Thursday: Both at once

A neighbor in winter gloves hands over a tablet. "The screen will not listen to my taps!" Rocket says. He taps it with his bare finger. It works.

Raven points at the gloves. "What do you notice?" she asks. "The screen shows pictures fine. It just cannot feel the taps through thick cloth."

Nova glows green. "This screen has two jobs," she says. "It shows and it feels. Would you like a hint? Which job failed?"

One device, two jobs

Some devices are input and output at the same time.

A touchscreen shows pictures, which is output. It also feels your taps, which is input. Two jobs share one piece of glass.

A headset with a microphone plays sound in your ears and takes in your voice.

A game controller takes in button presses and also buzzes in your hands.

Testing one job at a time

When a two-job device acts up, test each job on its own.

The tablet in the story passed the output test. Pictures showed up fine. It failed the input test, but only with gloves on.

A touchscreen feels a finger through a tiny electric change in the glass. Thick gloves block that change, so the tap never arrives.

Nothing was broken. The crew wrote the case down: input blocked by gloves. Case closed.

  • Test the output job: does it show or play anything?
  • Test the input job: does it feel, hear or see you?
  • Write down which job failed.
WHICH JOB FAILED?
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
A touchscreen shows pictures but ignores every tap. Which job failed?
A headset hears your voice but plays no sound. Which job failed?
A game controller buzzes but no button works. Which job failed?
A touchscreen does two jobs. One is input. What is the other?
WHY THIS EXERCISEShowing pictures is output. Feeling taps is input. A touchscreen does both on one piece of glass.
DeviceIs it both input and output?
Touchscreen?
Plain keyboard?
Headset with a microphone?
Printer?
WHY THIS EXERCISEA device is both only when it has an input job and an output job. Many have just one.
Which job of the touchscreen did the gloves block?
A headset plays sound. Is that its input job or its output job?
When a two-job device acts up, test how many jobs at a time?
PUT THE GLOVES CASE IN ORDER
  • ?Notice the screen ignores taps
  • ?Test the output job: pictures show fine
  • ?Test the input job: taps fail with gloves, work without
  • ?Write it down: input blocked by gloves
WHY THIS EXERCISETesting each job alone found the cause fast. Nothing had to be opened or replaced.

Two-job devices are everywhere once you start looking. A car dashboard screen shows a map and feels your taps.

A smart watch shows the time and feels your wrist moving. A laptop touchpad feels your finger and some can click back.

How many jobs does a touchscreen do?
WHY THIS EXERCISETwo jobs, input and output, on one piece of glass. That is what makes a touchscreen special.
Try it
Find one device in your home that does both jobs.
Say its input job and its output job out loud.
Ask a grown-up to name one more two-job device.

Excellent testing, Crew Technician! Tomorrow you will review the whole week with a big sorting game.
