Computers everywhere
// Hardware, software and the path from input to output

Friday: Computers everywhere

Rocket races in with a list. "Only three computers at the station!" he says. "The laptop, the tablet and the big control screen."

Raven points at the door, the kitchen and the hallway lights. "What do you notice?" she asks. "The door unlocks with a code. The oven has a timer."

Nova spins in a slow circle. "Many computers hide inside other things," she says. "Would you like a hint? Look for anything with buttons and a little screen."

Kinds of computers

Some computers are easy to spot. A desktop sits on a desk with its own screen and keyboard. A laptop folds up to travel. A tablet is a flat screen you touch.

A phone is a small computer that fits in a pocket. A game console is a computer built for games.

Other computers hide inside everyday things. A washing machine, a microwave, a car and a traffic light have small computers inside.

ComputerInputOutput
LaptopKeyboard and touchpadScreen and speakers
TabletTouchscreenScreen and speakers
Washing machineDial and buttonsLights, beeps and the drum spinning
Traffic lightTimer and road sensorsRed, yellow and green lights

Every one of these follows the same path. Input, process, output, and sometimes storage.

Week one review

  1. A computer is a system of parts that work together.
  2. Hardware is the parts you can touch. Software is the instructions.
  3. Information travels from input to process to output.
  4. Memory holds work right now. Storage keeps files for later.
  5. Computers come in many shapes, and many hide inside other things.
SPOT THE HIDDEN COMPUTER
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
Which of these has a small computer inside?
What is the input on a washing machine?
Which computer is built mostly for games?
StatementTrue or false?
A phone is a kind of computer.?
Only things with a keyboard are computers.?
A traffic light can have a computer inside.?
A tablet uses a touchscreen for input.?
WHY THIS EXERCISEAnything that takes input, processes it and gives output is a computer, whatever its shape.
What do we call the parts of a computer you can touch?
WHY THIS EXERCISEHardware is the touchable half of every computer, from a laptop to a traffic light.
A kind of computer that folds up to travel is a what?
A computer that is a flat screen you touch is a what?
The step between input and output is called what?
The part that keeps files when the power is off is what?
PUT THE PATH IN ORDER
  • ?The processor works on it
  • ?Output comes out
  • ?Input goes in
  • ?Storage keeps it for later
WHY THIS EXERCISEThis four step path is the big idea of week one. Every computer follows it.
Try it
Walk through one room with a grown-up.
Count the things that might have a computer inside.
Look for buttons, little screens, lights that blink or beeps.
Safety first
Look only. Do not press buttons on an oven, heater or washing machine.
A grown-up handles anything that gets hot or plugs into the wall.

Week one is done, Crew Technician! You can name the parts, sort hardware from software and follow the path. Tomorrow the Crew Quest takes the hunt to your whole home.
