Family Helper Day: The ready walk

Bruce stands by the Helper chart with Ferris the Fox. Ferris adds a star. "Ready for anything: learned."

Bruce turns to you. "Now it is your turn, Helper. Not on a screen. At home, with your grown-up."

"Say your three facts out loud. Find the first aid kit. Walk your two ways out to the meeting spot."

He taps the chart. "Ready is a habit. Start it today."

  1. Three facts: learned at home, said out loud, never typed.
  2. Lost: stop, stay, look, ask a safe helper, wait.
  3. Scrape: stop, wash, cover, tell.
  4. Fire plan: two ways out, a meeting spot, stay out, a grown-up calls.
◇ FAMILY HELPER DAY: THE READY WALK
Facts: the child says their three facts out loud. The grown-up checks each one.
Lost game: the grown-up plays a store worker. The child stops, counts, looks, and asks for help.
First aid: find the kit together. The child points to the bandages and says the four scrape steps.
Fire plan: walk two ways out of the child's room, then to the meeting spot. Walk, do not run.
Finish at the meeting spot. Say the spot's name out loud together, three times.
For a grown-up
Keep the facts practice private and relaxed. Praise the effort, then move on.
Check every way out yourself before the walk. A window counts only if you have checked it.
Put the home map from Thursday on the fridge. Plan a second walk in a few months.
Safety first
This is practice. Walk, never run. The grown-up leads and opens any window or door.
A grown-up handles everything in the first aid kit except the bandages.
Never practice being lost anywhere but at home.
