Family Helper Day: The real list

Riley stands at the den door with a list in his paw. Grouped by aisle. Checked twice.

Ferris the Fox adds a star to the Helper chart. "Lists and errands: learned."

Riley nods. "Now it is your turn, Helper. A real list, a real trip, two hands, cold things first."

He waves. "And if a neighbor needs something, you know what to do. Go with your grown-up."

  1. Write the list at home, grouped by aisle.
  2. Pack with a checklist, heavy at the bottom.
  3. Two hands, walk, set bags on the counter.
  4. Cold things first, old food to the front, heavy cans down low.
  5. A neighbor errand is a we job: ask, offer, listen.
◇ FAMILY HELPER DAY: LIST, TRIP, PUT AWAY
Together, walk the kitchen and write this week's store list. Group it by aisle.
Read it back to each other and add anything missing.
Go to the store together. The child checks items off the list as they go in the cart.
At home, the child carries one light bag with two hands to the counter.
The child puts away cold things first, then fruit and vegetables, then cans and boxes.
Fold the empty bags together and put them away.
If a neighbor could use a hand, offer one small errand this week, together.
For a grown-up
Let your child hold the list and cross things off. Owning the paper is half the lesson.
Hand over only light bags. Say two hands once, then let them do it.
If you visit a neighbor, stay at your child's side the whole time. Let them do the greeting.
Safety first
A grown-up carries anything heavy, anything in glass and anything that leaks.
Bags go on a counter or table, never on the floor or stairs.
Never visit a neighbor without your grown-up beside you.
