Friday: Review: lists and errands

Rosie the Rabbit bounces into the den waving a sign. "Riley! Lists! Bags! Neighbors! You did all of it!"

Freddy the Frog hops onto the Helper chart. "Review time. Lists by aisle. Checklists in groups. Two hands and cold first. Grown-up beside you."

Riley laughs. "Paper does not forget, and neither do I now." Freddy grins. "Prove it, Helper."

The week in one look

  1. A list is memory on paper. Write it before you leave and group it by aisle.
  2. A checklist has a box beside each item. Pack in groups, heavy at the bottom.
  3. Carry with two hands. Cold things away first. Old food to the front.
  4. A neighbor errand is a we job. Ask, offer and listen.
FREDDY'S QUICK QUIZ
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
Why group a store list by aisle?
What is the first thing put away at home?
Who goes with you on an errand?
Where do heavy things go in a bag?

Write an errand plan

A plan is a short piece of writing. It tells what you will do and in what order.

Here is Riley's errand plan for Oliver. Notice how each sentence does one job.

Riley's errand plan
What: get Oliver's groceries and bring them to his tree.
Who: me and my grown-up.
List: bread, apples, soup, frozen peas, soap, grouped by aisle.
Steps: ask Oliver, write the list, go together, cold things first.
Check back: Friday afternoon.
PUT THE PARTS OF AN ERRAND PLAN IN ORDER.
  • ?The list, grouped by aisle
  • ?What the errand is
  • ?The steps in order
  • ?When to check back
  • ?Who is going
WHY THIS EXERCISEA plan reads like a story: what, who, how, and what comes after.
What goes beside each item on a checklist?
Which word means to bring something to someone?
New cans go in front of or behind the old cans?
What do we call one row of the same kind of thing in a store?
StatementTrue or false?
A list written at the store works as well as one written at home.?
Two hands on a bag stops swinging.?
You should offer before you carry a neighbor's bag.?
A plan tells what you will do and in what order.?
WHY THIS EXERCISEWritten early, carried steady, offered kindly, planned in order.
What did Ferris say paper does not do?
WHY THIS EXERCISEPaper does not forget. That is the whole reason to make a list.
How many parts does Riley's errand plan have?
WHY THIS EXERCISEFive short parts are enough to plan almost any errand.
Try it
Say the five parts of a plan out loud to a grown-up. What, who, list, steps, check back.
Then tell them one real errand your family could do this week.

Rosie is cheering and Freddy is nodding. Tomorrow is Family Helper Day: a real list and a real errand with your grown-up.
