Family Helper Day: One clean room

Samantha the Squirrel stands at the den door with a cloth, a broom, a checklist. "Crew, today we clean one whole room, start to finish."

Ferris the Fox adds a row to the Helper chart: One room cleaned. "Not perfect. Finished. That is what the checklist is for."

Samantha hands you the card. "Pick a room with your grown-up. Tidy, wipe, sweep, take it out, wash. Check every box."

  1. Tidy first so tools can reach everything.
  2. Wipe with a wrung-out warm cloth, high to low. Sprays are for grown-ups.
  3. Sweep edges to middle in short strokes. One pile, dustpan flat.
  4. Take out trash and recycling with your grown-up. Two hands, new bag.
  5. Sort recycling by asking what your town takes. Never guess.
  6. Wash hands when the last box is checked.
◇ CLEAN ONE ROOM TOGETHER
Step 1: Pick one room with your grown-up. The kitchen, your room or the living room.
Step 2: Set out the checklist and a cloth. Add warm water, a broom and a dustpan.
Step 3: Tidy. Pick up everything on the floor and put it where it lives.
Step 4: Wipe tables and shelves, high to low. Your grown-up does any spray jobs.
Step 5: Sweep edges to middle. One pile. Scoop it into the trash.
Step 6: Take out the trash and recycling together. Sort recycling by your town's card.
Step 7: Wash hands. Check the last box. Check the Helper chart row too.
Safety first
Warm water only. A grown-up handles sprays, cleaners and anything sharp or broken.
A grown-up opens outside bins and carries anything heavy.
Wipe up floor drips right away. Wash hands with soap at the end.
For a grown-up
Let your child hold the checklist and call out each step. You follow their lead.
Keep the room small enough to finish in about 30 minutes. Finished beats perfect.
Afterward, ask which step was easiest and which was hardest. That is tomorrow's plan.
