Friday: The clean-up checklist

Freddy the Frog hops onto the den stump with a clipboard. "Review day! This week had a lot of steps. How do we remember them all?"

Samantha the Squirrel holds up a card with boxes down the side. "A checklist. Every job in the right order, and a box to check."

Rosie the Rabbit cheers. "Check, check, check! Nothing gets forgotten, and you can see how much you did."

Why a checklist?

A checklist is a list of jobs with a box beside each one. You do a job, you check the box.

Checklists help in two ways. You never forget a step. And you see your progress, which feels good.

The order on a checklist matters. Clean up follows a smart order. Tidy, wipe high to low, sweep last, take it out, wash hands.

Why that order?

  • Tidy first, so the broom and cloth can reach everything.
  • Wipe high before low, because crumbs fall down.
  • Sweep last, so everything that fell gets gathered.
  • Take out trash and recycling, so the bins are ready for next time.
  • Wash hands, because you touched the dirty things.
PUT THE CLEAN-UP CHECKLIST IN THE SMART ORDER.
  • ?Tidy: pick up toys, shoes and papers
  • ?Wipe tables and shelves, high to low
  • ?Sweep the floor into one pile and scoop it
  • ?Take out trash and recycling with a grown-up
  • ?Wash your hands
WHY THIS EXERCISEEach step gets the next one ready. Tidy, wipe, sweep, out, wash.
CHECKLIST THINKING
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
Why does sweeping come after wiping?
What do you do when a job is done?
Why does tidying come first?

Freddy's review

  1. Wipe: warm water, wrung-out cloth, clear first, long strokes, high to low, hang to dry.
  2. Sweep: big things up, edges to middle, short strokes, one pile, dustpan flat, tools away.
  3. Take it out: tie, two hands, carry with a grown-up, new bag, wash hands.
  4. Sort: ask what your town takes, empty and rinse, flatten, group by kind, never guess.
  5. Checklist: tidy, wipe, sweep, take it out, wash. Check each box.

WHY THIS EXERCISEFive boxes cover a whole room. Short enough to remember, long enough to finish.
Try it
Write the five-box checklist on a card. Decorate it if you like.
Tape it where you clean up most. Use it once this weekend.
