Family Helper Day: Kitchen crew

The den smells like cinnamon. Bennie and Lucy have the snack mix card pinned to the Helper chart.

"Today you run the kitchen job with your grown-up," Bennie says. "Make the mix, or pack tomorrow's lunch."

Lucy adds, "Clean hands, level cups, slow stirring, and a wiped counter. You know every step."

  1. Wash hands first: wet, soap, scrub, rinse, dry.
  2. Wash produce with water and rubbing, no soap.
  3. Measure dry things by scooping and leveling. Pour wet things to the line.
  4. Three teaspoons fill one tablespoon. Four quarter cups fill one cup.
  5. Pack heavy and hard things low, soft things on top, lids tight.
  6. Wipe back to front with a damp cloth. Grown-ups handle sprays.
◇ KITCHEN JOB TOGETHER
Choose one job: make Bennie's snack mix, or pack a lunch box for tomorrow.
The grown-up picks the foods and checks for allergies.
Step 1: Both of you wash your hands, all six steps.
Step 2: The child reads the card or the packing list out loud.
Step 3: The child measures or packs. The grown-up watches and helps with lids.
Step 4: The child wipes the counter back to front.
Step 5: Add Kitchen Helper to the Helper chart with a check mark.
Safety first
No stove, oven, toaster or sharp tools for the child. A grown-up does any cutting.
Nothing is tasted during the job. Enjoy the mix later, together.
Warm water only. Wipe floor spills right away.
For a grown-up
Let your child read the card and do the measuring, even if it is slow.
Say level when a scoop is heaped, and let them fix it.
Pick a weekly kitchen job your child can own from now on.
FAMILY KITCHEN CHECK
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
The quarter cup is the only clean cup. How many scoops make one cup?
Your grown-up gets out the peeler. What is your job?
The mix is done. What is the last kitchen job?
How many steps are in the hand washing routine?
WHY THIS EXERCISESix small steps make one strong habit.
On paper, draw your lunch box packed in layers. Label the bottom, the middle and the top.

Kitchen crew complete! Next week Lucy shows you how to set, serve and clear the family table.
