Friday: Wipe it up and review

Crumbs dot the counter. Rosie the Rabbit bounces in. "You measured, you mixed, you packed. You are a real Kitchen Helper!"

Bennie hands you a damp cloth. "One more job. A helper leaves the kitchen cleaner than they found it."

Freddy the Frog hops onto a stool. "Then it is review time. Let us see what stuck this week!"

Wiping the counter

Wiping is the last kitchen job every time. Crumbs and drips attract bugs and make floors slippery.

You need a clean cloth, warm water and a trash bin. A grown-up handles any spray cleaners.

  1. Move things off the counter: cups, boxes, the lunch box.
  2. Sweep crumbs into your cupped hand, or straight into the bin.
  3. Wet the cloth with warm water and wring it out until it is damp.
  4. Wipe from the back of the counter to the front.
  5. Rinse the cloth, wring it, and hang it up to dry.
  6. Put the things back where they live.
  • Damp means a little wet. A dripping cloth leaves puddles.
  • Back to front pushes crumbs toward you, not into the corners.
  • Wipe a water spill on the floor right away, before anyone slips.
Safety first
Only water and a cloth. A grown-up uses any spray or cleaner.
Tell a grown-up about any spill near an outlet or the cooking area. Do not wipe there yourself.
Try it
Wipe one counter or table today using all six steps.
Check the corners when you finish. Any crumbs left behind?
PUT THE WIPING STEPS IN ORDER.
