Thursday: Meet the earthworm

After digging, Rocket spots something wiggly.

"A worm!" Raven whispers. "What do you notice?"

Nova says, "Let us be gentle soil scientists."

An earthworm's body

An earthworm has a soft body made of rings.

Each ring is called a segment.

Tiny bristles help it grip the soil.

A hard spot on its head pushes into cracks.

Breathing through skin

Earthworms breathe through their thin skin.

Their skin makes a slippery slime.

The slime keeps the worm damp.

A worm needs damp skin to breathe.

So worms live in damp soil.
