Machine Day: Valve Hunt

Rocket runs from the kitchen to the yard. "Valves everywhere!"

Raven writes a list. "What do you notice they all do?"

Nova floats along. "Look for things that twist to open or close."

  1. A faucet is a valve. It lets water through or blocks it.
  2. The stem has screw threads. A twist becomes a push.
  3. A soft rubber washer presses down and stops the water.
  4. A worn washer can let a faucet drip.
  5. A grown-up turns the valves under the sink.
◇ FAMILY VALVE HUNT
Walk through your home with your family.
Find things that twist to open or close.
Try a faucet, a hose tap, a jar lid, a bottle cap.
Count how many you find.
Pick one and tell how it works.
For a grown-up
Point out the supply valves under a sink and behind a toilet.
Let the child watch, not turn, those valves.
Ask: what moves when you twist?
Safety first
Use cold water only.
A grown-up turns any valve on a pipe.
Lids and caps stay away from little kids.
