Engineers begin by defining a design problem precisely: the criteria a solution must meet and the constraints that limit it, including the science that applies. This week the problem is a windowsill growing station for the course sprouts. The criteria are height gained, leaf color and upright stems. The constraints are a box-sized space, household materials, window light only and one week to test. The station is tested against a plain jar, judged with a systematic process, and improved. The week ends with the Cells and Systems report, a written explanation of everything the course has shown.
