Body Lab Day: Breath count

Rocket, Raven and Nova plan a breath count.

"Count at rest, then after moving," says Raven.

Nova says, "Look for the pattern!"

  1. You have two spongy lungs in your chest.
  2. Air goes from your nose down the windpipe.
  3. Then the air fills your lungs.
  4. The diaphragm is the main breathing muscle.
  5. Oxygen goes into your blood. Carbon dioxide goes out.
  6. You breathe faster after you move.
◇ FAMILY BREATH COUNT
Everyone sits still with a hand on their chest.
A grown-up watches a clock for a short time.
Each person counts their own breaths in and out.
Now everyone marches or hops in place for a bit.
Count breaths again for the same short time.
Rest together, then count one more time.
Talk about the pattern you see.
Safety first
Clear a space so nobody trips.
Breathe normally while you count.
Stop and rest if you feel too tired.
For a grown-up
Focus on the pattern, not the numbers.
Do not compare people.
If you have health questions, ask a doctor or nurse.
PATTERN CHECK
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
After moving, breathing is...
Which muscle helps you breathe in?
What does your body need from air?
Draw your family doing the breath count.

Big breath in, big cheer out! Great work!

Next week, you will learn how food helps your body.
