Thursday: Smell helps taste

Rocket has a stuffy nose. "Food seems so plain today!"

Raven asks, "What do you notice?"

Nova whispers, "Maybe your tongue needs its nose friend."

Taste plus smell

When you chew, smells travel up into your nose.

Your nose and tongue work together.

Taste and smell mixed together is called flavor.

A stuffy nose blocks the smells.

Then food can seem plain, with little flavor.

You need

  • A piece of orange peel
  • A slice of apple
  • Your nose and your fingers
Safety first
A grown-up does all the peeling and cutting.
This is a smell test only. Nothing goes in your mouth.
Pinch your nose gently. Breathe through your mouth.

Steps

  1. Hold the orange peel near your nose.
  2. Sniff slowly. Notice the smell.
  3. Now gently pinch your nose closed.
  4. Hold the peel near your nose again.
  5. Can you smell it now?
  6. Let go of your nose and sniff once more.
  7. Try it again with the apple slice.
