Thursday: Handwashing Science

Rocket sticks his hands under the tap, splashes twice and shakes them dry. "Done! Speed record!"

Raven checks the clock. "What do you notice? That took about three seconds."

Nova hovers by the soap. "Speed is great for races," she says. "Germs need a little more time."

Rocket laughs. "Okay, let's test a slower plan."

Why wash?

Washing your hands is one of the best ways to stop germs from spreading.

Your hands touch many things all day. Germs can ride from your hands to your mouth.

Soap and water wash germs away down the drain.

Five steps

  1. Wet your hands with clean, running water. Turn off the tap. Add soap.
  2. Lather by rubbing your hands together with the soap.
  3. Scrub for at least 20 seconds. Get the backs, between fingers and under nails.
  4. Rinse your hands well under clean, running water.
  5. Dry your hands with a clean towel or an air dryer.

How long is 20 seconds? Hum the birthday song two times.
