Body Lab Day: Glitter Germ Test

Rocket holds up a jar of glitter. "Pretend these sparkles are germs," he says.

Raven grins. "Then what do you notice when we try to wash them off?"

Nova hovers over the sink. "Change one thing at a time," she says. "Then see which wash works best."

The family rolls up their sleeves and heads for the sink.

  1. Germs are tiny living things. Some make people sick, and some bacteria help us.
  2. Skin blocks germs. Mucus traps them. Tears wash them away.
  3. White blood cells gobble up germs and help the body remember them.
  4. Wet, lather, scrub for 20 seconds, rinse and dry.
◇ GLITTER GERM TEST
A grown-up rubs a little hand lotion on each player's hands.
A grown-up sprinkles a pinch of glitter on top. These are pretend germs.
Test 1: Rinse with water only for 5 seconds. Count the glitter left.
Add lotion and glitter again.
Test 2: Wash with soap, but scrub for only 5 seconds.
Add lotion and glitter again.
Test 3: Use all five steps and scrub for 20 seconds.
Compare: which wash left the least glitter?
Safety first
Keep glitter away from eyes and mouth.
Use warm or cold water, never hot.
A grown-up handles the glitter. Wipe up spills so nobody slips.
TestHow we washedGlitter left: lots, some or a little?

2Soap, 5 seconds
3Soap, 20 seconds, all five steps
For a grown-up
Glitter is a model, not real germs. Real germs are too small to see.
Ask: which spots on the hands kept the most glitter? What does that tell us?
