Rocket sorts his snap blocks into piles. Red blocks here, blue blocks there.
"Now the same kinds are together," he says. "Each pile can build one thing."
Raven nods. "What do you notice about cells that are alike?"
Nova blinks her lights. "Think about a sports team," she says. "Players who do the same job stand together."
A tissue is a group of similar cells that work together.
The cells in a tissue are alike, and they share one kind of job.
Your body has four main kinds of tissue.
| Tissue | What it does |
|---|---|
| covering tissue (epithelial) | Covers body surfaces and lines the inside of hollow organs |
| connective tissue | Holds parts together and gives support |
| muscle tissue | Shortens, or contracts, to make body parts move |
| nerve tissue | Carries messages in the brain, spinal cord and nerves |
Bone and blood are kinds of connective tissue.
Muscle cells are long and thin. They are sometimes called muscle fibers.
Nerve cells pass messages to each other, like a relay team.

Nice teamwork! Tomorrow we see how different tissues join to build an organ.
