Bike Shop Day: Family Quick Check

Rocket holds up his Quick Check card. It has five boxes and tiny drawings.

"Let's test it on a real bike!" he says.

Raven reads the first box. "What do you notice? Is every step clear?"

Nova hovers over the card. "A good checklist works for anyone who reads it," she says.

The family gathers around the bike.

  1. Check your bike before each ride: air, brakes and wheels.
  2. A: the right pressure is on the sidewall. Look for tire damage.
  3. B: at least 1 inch of space when the lever is squeezed. Pads do not rub.
  4. C: is the chain loose, rusty or dirty? Quick releases are closed tight.
  5. Check it over for loose or broken parts. Helmet on for every ride.
◇ MAKE AND TEST A FAMILY QUICK CHECK CARD
Make a neat Quick Check card with your family.
Write the five steps: Air, Brakes, Chain and cranks, Quick releases, Check it over.
Use it on a bike that a grown-up holds still.
No bike? Use it on a bike picture.
Or use a family member's bike with their OK.
Each person reads one step out loud while everyone looks.
Was any step confusing? Change the words to make it clearer.
Keep the card where your family keeps the bikes.
Safety first
The bike stays standing still. A grown-up holds it.
A grown-up handles the gauge, pump and quick releases.
Keep hands away from the chain, gears and spokes.
Wash your hands if you touch the chain.
For a grown-up
Let your child lead the reading of each step.
Fix anything the check finds before anyone rides.
