Bike Shop Day: Helmet Fit Check

The family lines up in the shop with every helmet in the house.

Rocket reads the fit steps. Raven holds a mirror.

"What do you notice when you yawn?" Raven asks her cousin.

Nova floats past each helmet. "Check each step," she says. "Then fix one thing at a time."

Soon every helmet passes the yawn test.

  1. A bike fits when your feet easily touch the ground from the seat.
  2. Your legs should not be too bent when you pedal.
  3. Wear a helmet with a CPSC sticker on every ride.
  4. A helmet sits low and level, with a strap V and a snug chin strap.
  5. Take care of your helmet, and get a new one after a fall.
◇ FAMILY HELMET FIT CHECK
Each person brings a helmet, or uses a helmet picture.
Put the helmet on. Does it rock side to side?
Do the finger check above the eyebrows.
Look for the V under each ear in a mirror.
Check the chin strap with one or two fingers.
Do the yawn test together.
A grown-up adjusts anything that needs it.
Record each check in your Bike Shop Notebook.
Safety first
A grown-up adjusts pads, sliders and straps.
Straps should feel snug, not painful.
No helmets at home? Do the finger checks and draw each step.
For a grown-up
Fit steps here follow a children's hospital helmet fit guide.
If a helmet cannot fit snugly, it may be the wrong size.
