Wednesday: Plants through the year

Rocket kicks through a pile of leaves.

"Is the tree sick?" he asks.

Raven looks up. "What do you notice on the branches?"

Nova says, "Look for tiny buds."

What plants do

Plants change with the seasons.

In spring, seeds sprout and new leaves open.

In summer, plants grow and make flowers.

In fall, many plants make seeds.

Many trees drop their leaves in fall.

In winter, many plants rest.

The tree is not sick. It is resting!

Trees that stay green

Some trees keep their leaves all year.

We call them evergreens.

Many evergreens have thin leaves called needles.

Other trees drop their leaves and grow new ones.

Both kinds are healthy trees.
