Explorer Day: Plant walk

Raven packs the field notebook.

Rocket packs a magnifier.

"Plant walk day!" Rocket cheers.

Nova says, "Look for all four parts."

  1. A plant has roots, a stem, leaves and a flower.
  2. Roots take in water. Leaves take in light.
  3. Many plants grow from seeds.
  4. Plants need light, water and air.
  5. Leaves come in many shapes.
  6. Grass is small. Trees are big.
◇ EXPLORER DAY PLANT WALK
Walk with your grown-up in a yard or park.
Find a plant with a flower. Point to each part.
Find a leaf with points. Find a round leaf.
Find the biggest plant. Find the smallest.
Look at your field guide from Wednesday.
Did you see any plant from the list?
Draw your favorite plant in your notebook.
Safety first
Stay with your grown-up the whole time.
Look with your eyes. Do not pick plants.
Never touch a plant you do not know.
Never eat a berry or a leaf outside.
Wash your hands when you get home.
For a grown-up
Ask: which part is under the ground?
Ask: what does this plant need to grow?
Praise careful looking, not just right answers.
Write the date in the notebook for your child.
