Explorer Day: Bird walk

Rocket and Raven walk to the park.

They stop every few steps to listen.

"There! On the branch!" whispers Raven.

Nova hums, "Note it in the book."

  1. Birds have feathers, two wings, a beak and two legs.
  2. All birds lay eggs.
  3. A beak is a tool. Its shape fits the food.
  4. Birds sing and call to find each other.
  5. Birds hop, peck, splash, sing and fly.
  6. A tally counts birds, one line each.
◇ EXPLORER DAY BIRD WALK
Walk slowly with your grown-up.
Stop every ten steps and listen.
Point when you hear a bird.
Look for feathers, a beak and two legs.
Make a tally line for each bird.
Watch what each bird does.
Draw your favorite bird in your notebook.
Safety first
Stay next to your grown-up.
Watch birds from far away.
Never touch a bird, a nest or an egg.
Leave feathers on the ground.
Leave mushrooms and unknown plants alone.
Wash your hands when you go in.
For a grown-up
Pick a short, slow route.
Ask: what is the bird doing?
Ask: is its beak thin or thick?
Write the date and place on the notebook page.
A found feather stays on the ground.
