Friday: Week 1 Review

At the end of the week, Maya, Ben and Rosa compare notes.

"It is not a brain," Maya says. "It is a very good pattern guesser."

Ben nods. "Then my job is to check the guess." Rosa laughs. "And to delete the free delivery."

This week in five lines

  • An AI system takes a goal and produces predictions, recommendations or decisions (NIST).
  • Machine learning finds patterns in very large amounts of training data, usually supplied by people (AI4K12).
  • AI can reason about complex problems, but it does not think the way a person does (AI4K12).
  • Generative AI makes new content modeled on the data it learned from (NIST).
  • Text tools predict the next word, which can give right answers and wrong ones (NIST).
REVIEW
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
What do text tools built on large language models predict?
Who usually supplies training data?
Which statement is true?
A chatbot adds a claim you never gave it. What is the safest view of that claim?
StatementTrue or false?
Generative AI can make text, images, audio and video.?
Next-word prediction can produce wrong or inconsistent answers.?
By the NIST description, an AI system only ever writes text.?
AI systems need very large amounts of data to find patterns.?
WHY THIS EXERCISEThese ideas come back in every week that follows.
FROM GOAL TO OUTPUT
  • ?You check the output.
  • ?The system finds patterns.
  • ?You give the tool a request.
  • ?People supply training data.
  • ?The tool predicts an output.
WHY THIS EXERCISEThe last step is the one this course is about: a person checks.
In your own words, what is generative AI?
WHY THIS EXERCISEGenerative AI is the kind of AI most people now meet first.
