Mission control wants proof that Sky Sorter can work from signals alone. Rocket has an idea for a test.
"One of us is the Sensor," he says. "The Sensor can see the card but can only report light or dark, square by square."
Raven nods. "The other is Perception. Perception never sees the card, only the list of numbers."
Nova hovers between them like a referee. "No hints, no pointing and no describing shapes," she says firmly.
Rocket picks up the first card and lays a grid over it. Raven turns her chair to face the wall.
You and a partner will pass snapshot cards as signals only, then try to perceive the label.
The Sensor reports each square of a grid as 1 for bright or 0 for dark.
Perception rebuilds the picture from the numbers and predicts star, planet, comet or satellite streak.
| Card | 16 numbers sent | Predicted label | True label | Right? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | ||||
| 2 | ||||
| 3 | ||||
| 4 |
Copy this table on paper and add rows for cards 5 to 8.
Here is one signal the crew sent. Perception shaded every 1.
| Row | Square 1 | Square 2 | Square 3 | Square 4 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Row 1 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
| Row 2 | 0 | 1 | 0 | 0 |
| Row 3 | 0 | 0 | 1 | 0 |
| Row 4 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 1 |
| What the relay shows | True or false? |
|---|---|
| Perception got only numbers, never the picture itself. | ? |
| A 4 by 4 grid keeps every detail of the drawing. | ? |
| A coarse grid can make two labels look the same. | ? |
| Mistakes in the relay can come from the signal, not only from Perception. | ? |
Excellent relay. Tomorrow you will turn this lab into a real sensor plan for Sky Sorter.
