Wednesday: Explorer Lab: The Lock Box Sort

Rocket draws a lock on an envelope. "This is our Lock Box," he says.

Raven spreads out ten cards. "What do you notice? Some of these should go inside."

Nova hovers over the cards. "Ask the same question for each one," she says.

"Could it help a stranger find someone or open their things?"

Your lab

You will sort kinds of information into the Lock Box or the Share Pile.

  • Ten index cards or paper strips
  • A pencil
  • An envelope with a lock drawn on it
  • A partner or a grown-up, if you can
Safety first
Write only the words from the list. Never write your real address or password.
Pencil points stay down at the table.
Nothing goes in your mouth.
  1. Copy each card from the list below onto its own slip.
  2. Read each card. Ask: could it help a stranger find someone or open their things?
  3. If yes, put it in the Lock Box envelope.
  4. If no, put it in the Share Pile.
  5. Count each group. Write the counts in the table.
  6. Talk about any card that was hard to place.

WHY THIS EXERCISEPrivate information goes in the Lock Box. Safe, general things go in the Share Pile.
How many cards go in the Lock Box?
How many go in the Share Pile?

Even Share Pile things need a grown-up's OK before you type them into an app.

Share Pile means safe to talk about, not safe to type anywhere.

Before typing even a favorite color into an app, who do you ask? Type one word.
WHY THIS EXERCISEA grown-up decides if an app is a safe place to type anything.

Expert sorting! Tomorrow we practice what to do when an app asks questions.
