Tuesday: Patterns in Words

Rocket reads the station message log out loud. "Good morning, crew. Good morning, crew. Good morning, crew."

"Every message starts the same way!" he laughs.

Raven scans the page. "What do you notice about the questions?"

Nova blinks. "Look at the end of each one," she says. "Do you see a pattern?"

Language has patterns

Words are not random. They follow patterns.

A question often starts with who, what, where, when, why or how.

A question ends with a question mark.

Greetings often come at the start of a message.

People learn these patterns by hearing and reading lots of words.

Learning patterns from examples

AI that uses everyday language learned word patterns from a huge number of examples.

People gathered those examples. That is training data, like our photo cards.

Learning patterns is not the same as thinking like a person.

Our message table is only a tiny pretend example. It does not show exactly how real AI works.
