Monday: Can a Machine Talk?

Rocket finishes the night photos and sighs. "Nova, do you ever get tired?"

Raven looks up from her notebook. "Wait. What do you notice about how we talk to Nova?"

"We talk to her like a friend," Rocket says. "Is she a person?"

Nova spins slowly. "Good question," she says. "What is the same and different between us?"

Story helpers and real tools

Nova is a character in our story. In the story, she can talk and joke.

In real life, some AI can talk with us in everyday language too.

It might answer in words on a screen, or in a voice.

But real AI is a tool that people build. It is not a person.

It does not think the way a person does. It does not have feelings.

  • Everyday language means the words people use to talk and write.
  • Some AI can use everyday language to answer us.
  • Talking AI is still a tool, like a calculator is a tool.

Sounding friendly is not being a friend

A talking tool can use kind words. It can say "Great question!"

That does not mean it cares about you the way a friend does.

Real friends and family are people. They can truly care.
