Wednesday: Explorer Lab: Test Your Sorter

Rocket dumps a stack of blank index cards on the table. "Let's make our own mission photos!"

Raven grabs crayons. "We will draw rocks, plants and tools. What do you notice we need to hide?"

Nova blinks toward a cereal box. "Some cards should wait in there," she says. "Until the very end."

Your lab

You will build a paper sorting model, then test it on cards it never saw.

  • Twelve index cards or paper squares
  • Crayons or colored pencils
  • A pencil
  • An empty box or an envelope for hiding cards
  • A partner or a grown-up, if you can
Safety first
Use only paper, crayons and pencils.
Pencil points stay pointed down at the table.
Nothing goes in your mouth.
  1. On four cards, draw rocks. On four cards, draw plants. On four, draw tools.
  2. Write the true label on the back of each card.
  3. Pick one rock, one plant, one tool and one more card. Hide these four in the box.
  4. Look at the other eight cards. Write two or three rules that sort them.
  5. Have your partner take a hidden card and show you only the picture.
  6. Use your rules to guess. Then flip the card to check.
  7. Mark right or wrong in the table. Do all four test cards.

Here is a sample rule set. You may write your own.

  • Rule 1: If it has leaves, it is a plant.
  • Rule 2: If it has a handle, it is a tool.
  • Rule 3: Otherwise, it is a rock.
