Wednesday: Explorer Lab: Test the Tree

Raven deals out eight photo cards. "Let's test the tree on every card," she says.

Rocket is sure it will get all eight right. "My tree is perfect!"

"What do you notice about card 8?" Raven asks. "It is a metal ruler."

Nova blinks slowly. "Follow the questions exactly," she hints. "Do not skip ahead."

Your mission

You will make eight photo cards from the features table.

Then you will run each card through the crew's decision tree.

You will count how many the tree sorts right.

  • 8 index cards or paper squares
  • Crayons: green, brown and gray
  • A pencil
  • A copy of the decision tree from Tuesday
Safety first
Use only paper, pencils and crayons.
Carry pencils with the point down.
Clean up your cards when you finish.

  1. Draw each card to match its features. Write the true label on the back.
  2. Shuffle the cards and place them face up.
  3. Take one card. Ask question 1 of the tree.
  4. Follow the branches until you reach a label.
  5. Write the label the tree picked. Then flip the card to check.
  6. Do the same for all 8 cards.
