An air mass is a large body of air with nearly the same temperature and humidity throughout, picked up from the land or sea where it formed. Where two air masses meet is a front. When fronts pass over a place, the temperature, wind and sky change, often in a few hours. Forecasters watch air masses move and give a chance of rain instead of a promise.
