A cloud is a visible collection of tiny water droplets or ice crystals. Clouds form when air rises, expands and cools to its dew point, so that water vapor condenses onto tiny particles of dust, salt or smoke. The National Weather Service sorts clouds by height and shape into ten basic types built from four Latin roots, and each type tells a story about the air above you and the weather on its way.
