Thursday: The North Wind and the Sun

A cool breeze blows across the Story Stump.

Lucy the Ladybug holds tight to her daisy.

Chris the Coyote smiles. "This breeze reminds me of a fable," he says.

"It is about the wind and the sun. They both want to win."

"Who wins?" asks Lucy. "Listen and see," says Chris.

Learn it: compare what the characters do

In some fables, two characters try to do the same thing.

They try in different ways.

Ask: What did each one do? Which way worked?

The way that worked shows the lesson.

A cloak is a big, warm coat with no sleeves.

Read it
The North Wind and the Sun (a fable by Aesop)
The North Wind and the Sun had an argument.
Each one said, "I am the strongest!"
Then they saw a traveler on the road in a cloak.
"Whoever gets his cloak off wins," they agreed.
The Wind went first. He blew and blew.
But the harder he blew, the tighter the man held his cloak.
At last the Wind gave up.
Then the Sun came out and shone warm and bright.
The man felt the warm rays.
He took off his cloak, and then his coat.
Soon he was so warm, he swam in a stream.
Moral: Gentle ways work better than force.
