Saturday: Story Hunt

Oliver the Owl hoots from the top of the Story Stump.

"Story Hunt day!" he says. "Grab any book at home or at the library."

"Hunt for things that happen. Then find out why."

Ferris the Fox holds up his basket. "Happy hunting, readers!"

  1. A cause is why something happens.
  2. An effect is what happens.
  3. Because comes before a cause. So comes before an effect.
  4. One effect can lead to the next, like a chain.
◇ STORY HUNT: WHY DID IT HAPPEN?
Pick any story book with your grown-up.
Read it together.
Stop when something big happens.
Ask: Why did that happen?
Look back in the book for the cause.
Find the word because or so if you can.

  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
You want to know why. Which word do you look for?
Which part tells what happened?
"The pup was wet, so it shook." What is the effect?
"Lucy smiled because she found her kite." What is the cause?
