Wednesday: Who solves it?

Drip, drip. Rain falls on Fern Hollow all night.

In the morning, Riley the Raccoon peeks outside.

"Uh oh," he says. "That looks like a puzzle."

Ferris opens his book. "This story starts after a rainy night too."

"Watch what each character does," says Riley.

Learn it: what the characters do

Characters solve problems with their actions.

Their actions are the things they do.

Each action moves the story along.

Ferris asks: Who helped, and what did they do? He looks back.

Donnie knew where flat stones were. That action helped!

The Muddy Path
It rained all night in Fern Hollow.
In the morning, the path to the Story Stump was all mud.
Lucy the Ladybug could fly over it.
But the others got muddy paws and hooves.
"We need a dry way across," said Riley the Raccoon.
Donnie the Deer knew where some flat stones were.
Riley and Donnie carried the stones, one by one.
They set the stones in a line across the mud.
Then everyone hopped from stone to stone.
Not one paw got muddy!
"Stepping stones!" cheered Lucy from above.
