Potential energy is energy stored because of position, shape or arrangement. Lifting a ball stores gravitational potential energy in the ball and Earth system: the higher the ball, the more is stored. Stretching a rubber band or bending a ruler stores elastic potential energy in its shape. Stored energy is recoverable. Let the ball go and the potential energy becomes kinetic energy, so a ball from a higher ramp rolls faster and farther. The same lift stores more energy where gravity is stronger, so the amount stored depends on the arrangement of the two objects.
