Speed tells how fast an object changes its location. Average speed is the distance traveled divided by the time the motion took. Scientists measure distance in metres and time in seconds, the SI units kept by NIST, so speed comes out in metres per second. Every description of motion needs a reference frame, something you compare the motion to, and shared units so other people can check the numbers.
